The 60 Second Update with

Congresswoman
Michele Bachmann

2. Do the Republicans have a better solution?

Months ago, I opposed giving the auto industry a taxpayer bailout because I was concerned that they would end up exactly where they are today – sitting in bankruptcy court with $110 billion in taxpayer dollars down the tube.  Had they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the first place without government intervention, they could have seized the opportunity to reorganize their crippling union contracts and poor management systems without the heavy hand of government dictating their every move.  Now we are witnessing the repercussions of the government’s involvement as dealerships are arbitrarily losing their contracts with GM and Chrysler, with no explanation or transparency.  Moving forward, the best thing for the auto industry would be for the government to stop picking winners and losers and let the private sector make these decisions based on sound business principles.
